Past posts have focused on selling what you don’t have, but what about other benefits  that are of unique concern to physicians? By sharing information on these benefit supplements you can help your physician clients find the hidden value in an individual disability insurance supplement for physicians. Here are four benefits included in the MGIS/Sun Life Physician Group LTD plan:

Emergency Travel Assistance

When physicians travel outside of the country*, doing relief work in an area with few medical facilities, for example, and suffer a medical emergency, who takes care of them?

As frequent travelers, physicians are acutely aware of the possibility of needing emergency medical care while traveling. It’s for this reason that Emergency Travel Assistance is a group disability benefit your physician clients will want to hear about.

*Emergency Travel Assistance covers trips outside of the US for 90 days or less.

With this benefit, doctors, employees and family members who suffer an emergency while traveling 100 or more miles from home will receive assistance in locating pre-qualified, English-speaking doctors, pharmacies and hospitals anywhere in the world. In emergency situations, they can receive emergency medical evacuation, medical monitoring, and even have their minor children escorted back home, or their loved one flown to their side (if expected to be hospitalized for more than 7 days). And all of this is arranged with a call to a 24/7 telephone support line staffed by medically trained travel assistance experts.

Retro Disability Benefits® (optional)

Anyone suffering from a sudden, serious disabling event is going to need financial support. This is especially true for highly paid physicians. Typical group LTD plans have elimination periods that leave the insured without support for as much as 90 days. Retro Disability benefits help fill in the gap.

When a doctor or covered employee is hospitalized in the first 48 hrs of the disabling event, remains hospitalized for the next 14 days, and remains totally disabled for the remainder of the LTD elimination period, the Retro Disability Benefit will retroactively pay a lump sum benefit, from the time he was deemed totally disabled, without any offsets.

Employee Assistance Program

This comprehensive Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and Work/Life Services Benefit is available to all physicians and their employees.

The Employee Assistance Program provides confidential counseling to address personal issues employees may be facing. A toll-free line is staffed 24 hrs a day, seven days a week by experienced clinicians. Up to five face-to-face counseling sessions are also provided annually at no cost to the employee and dependants.1

Services like FamilySource®, Legal Connect ®, and EstateGuidance® provide employees with easy access to child care or elder care referrals, legal consultations, and referrals, even financial planning and free online will preparation.

HR Essentials

The HR Essentials benefit provides a wealth of information to HR specialists. A comprehensive online resource center covers employee benefits such as retirement, time-off and health care plans, as well as core HR functions like recruitment, screening, hiring and employment laws.
